After growing up in the suburbs of Langley, I finally made the move to the big city of Vancouver to attend the University of British Columbia. I studied English Literature and Psychology, and eventually went on to complete the Professional Development Program at Simon Fraser University, enabling me to teach K-12 in the B.C. public school system. Tying together my love for teaching and travel, I decided to take a job teaching K-7 in South Korea in 2014, and loved it so much I went back in 2017 for another year! I love being outdoors, and feel especially at peace when I’m near the sea. I am always keen to try out a new activity, and love to spend time with my family, especially my two younger brothers.
I have known for a long while that I wanted to work with children and youth in some capacity, and have spent time working with students from the preschool age all the way up to high school. In my experience, it’s in the early years that you really get to see the natural wonder and excitement as they interact with their surroundings, and engage with novel experiences. It is a special thing to be a part of this kind of learning, and it’s awesome to be there for those ‘aha’ moments that happen so often when you see something click with them.
I like to be creative in the classroom, and find different ways to help the students get engaged and excited about learning. Just as all teachers have different teaching styles, students have different learning styles! I do my best to accommodate that, and hope to ignite confidence and a love for learning in each and every student. I want them to feel respected and safe when they come into the classroom, and know that it’s a protected place to take risks, fail, succeed, and have fun.
I love to see the way they make sense of the world around them, with such imagination and awe! They are so much fun to be around, asking such honest and often profound questions in a way adults often do not. They help me to see the world differently, and I greatly appreciate that.
I make a lot of big veggie bowls and salads at home. I love to throw in all sorts of things, and it usually turns out being different every time! Usually it’s a base of quinoa, a lot of shredded veggies, avocado, seeds or nuts, and some kind of delicious sauce.
I wish I could teleport and arrive anywhere in the world in the blink of an eye!
I grew up with a dad who worked his whole life as an airline employee, so travelling is certainly one of my oldest and most favourite pastimes. I love to go on big adventure trips with my dad, get out of my comfort zone, and experience parts of the world that are very different from my own. I also enjoy running, hiking, and enjoying good meals with friends.
